snow dance

The snow flakes arrived. Our first major snow this winter happened last week and my four year old looked out the window with excitement. He shuffled his feet while kicking up the white dust. “I need to catch some of these on my tongue,” he said. He proceeded to catch three snowflakes to be exact. Then continued to shuffle and to wiggle and to walk in circles with some form of clumsy rhythm I’ve aptly titled: the snow dance.

Now most of the snow has melted and it’s a dreary morning. My son looked at me with a sad face and  asked “Where did the snow go?” Two seconds later he was singing his favorite songs in the car. No matter what the weather is like–he’s content. Pleased with the world no matter what it brings him. He cares so much about everyone and everything. You can see it in his bright blue eyes. You feel it in his expressions. You can experience it in his adorable little dance. He can find something to be happy about on the dreariest of days. I think I’ll ask myself the same question for the rest of my life: how did I get so lucky?

This dance isn’t only for snow but it inspired a song  I wrote for his preschool class.  As soon as I have a photo of his dance, I’ll post it here. Until then, here are the song lyrics…

Snow Dance

Snow flakes, Snow pants

Snow boots, Snow dance

Bundled up in my coat

‘Cause winter is here

And the temperature’s low

The weatherman says it’s going to snow

My scarf, my hat

My gloves, my sled

Bundled up in my coat

‘Cause winter is here

And the temperature’s low

The weatherman says it’s going to snow

Snow drifts, Snowball fights

Snow angels, Snowmen and ice

Bundled up in my coat

‘Cause winter is here

And the temperature’s low

The weatherman says it’s going to snow

Snow flakes, Snow pants

Snow boots, Snow dance

Bundled up in my coat

‘Cause winter is here

And the temperature’s low

My snow dance will make it snow
